Proposed Bond Projects
If the proposed bond measure passes, the projects below would be pursued. If the bond is not passed, the proposed projects would not be completed.
The average age of school facilities in the Centennial School District is 55 years old. Much of the work identified by the Long-Range Facilities Planning Committee is due to the age of the schools throughout the district.
Proposed projects identified include roofs, structural issues, HVAC systems, electrical systems, and windows. In addition, the committee identified safety and security improvements.
If the bond passes, the tax rate for the proposed $65 million bond would remain at $1.19 per $1000 of assessed value. If the bond does not pass, the tax would not go into effect and the proposed projects would not be completed.
The Centennial School District is the only district in Multnomah County whose sixth-grade students are at the elementary schools. Currently, Centennial Middle School is at capacity with only seventh and eighth-graders. The proposed bond, if passed, would move the sixth-grade classes out of the elementary schools, re-purpose Oliver Elementary School back to a middle school and split sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students between two middle schools.
Reasons for the proposal to combine grades six, seven and eight together, include:
Currently, four schools in the district - Meadows, Parklane, Patrick Lynch, and Powell Butte Elementary Schools do not have a dedicated gym space. They have one room that serves as a cafeteria, auditorium, and gym for physical education (P.E.) classes. This limits the amount of time students can spend in P.E. Lunch tables and chairs must be set up and taken down each day before and after lunch. In addition, the room serves as an auditorium, so assemblies and practices for school programs, plays and musicals must also be scheduled in. The district also serves breakfast at all of these schools
In addition, if passed, the bond would be used to improve safety and security throughout the district.
